ALERT!! Home Security Scam

BUYER BEWARE! Summer Scams have started in our area!

There is a door-to-door scam taking place here in Murfreesboro and you need to be aware of it! The neighborhoods of Brentmeade, Kensington, and Regency Park in North Murfreesboro have already been targeted.

AMP Security Company (a home security company from Utah) is currently canvassing neighborhoods to target homes that have home security signs in the yard. This company, AMP Security, has a “D” rating with the Better Business Bureau. Just do an online search (such as Google) for: “Honeywell Security Scam” or “AMP Security Scam”.

This group claims to be promoting “Guardian Protection Services” and will inform you they are conducting “official inspections” for HONEYWELL, one of the largest product dealers of home security systems. You will be informed that your system is antiquated, needs upgrading, and will offer you a FREE upgrade on all equipment with a $57.00 per month service.

What you get: a locked-in 5 year contract with a company that is not local. The call center is in Utah and if you have an incident, they will call Murfreesboro for you! The sales people use scare tactics and other unprofessional means to get you to sign a contract. They are ambitious, relentless and it is doubtful they have any background screening. DO NOT LET THEM INSIDE YOUR HOME!

Be aware if you sign with this company and try to cancel in the three (3) day trial period, they offer a 30-day free trial. DO NOT accept this offer! It’s a verbal agreement and once the 30-days are up, you are still locked into the contract, because they will not honor the verbal agreement.

Additionally, if you ask for an addendum to the agreement, prior to taking the 30-day trial, they will contact you by email. DO NOT accept the email, because the offer is without AUTHORIZATION and considered null/void.

Keep in mind these “sales people” are basically out-of-state hires who have been trained to scam consumers and the company places them in hotels/apartments until all targeted neighborhoods are canvassed…..then, they disappear.

What can I do to protect myself?:

1.Call your home security provider (ADT, Security First, etc) and report this activity.

2.Call the City of Murfreesboro Police Department to report them! Call: Murfreesboro Detectives at (615) 893-2717.

3.Again, DO NOT LET THEM IN YOUR HOME!

4. Ask questions! Especially why your system needs upgrading. Be as technical as you can because this will put them off.
